A survey on consumer perspectives of the halal industry conducted in Indonesia in March 2023 found that around 81 percent of respondents purchased halal ready-to-eat food and beverages. In comparison, around 53 percent of respondents stated that they purchased halal cosmetics.
The Indonesian halal consumers
For Indonesian Muslim consumers, the presence of a halal logo on the product packaging of food products is considered the most important factor to pay attention to when shopping. They also heavily rely on recommendations from friends and family for information about halal products. The focus on halal authenticity among Indonesian consumers has driven many food manufacturers and restaurants to undergo a regulated halal certification process to be more relevant in the market.
The halal market in Indonesia
Indonesia is home to the world's largest Muslim population, with over 207 million Muslims, comprising approximately 87 percent of the total population. The country is one of the international halal food market leaders and one of the largest consumer bases for halal cosmetics. These aspects highlight Indonesia's potential to evolve from being primarily a consumer to a producer of halal products. For Indonesian Muslim consumers, the halal status of a product means it is free of pork and certified by an Islamic authority. The presence of a halal logo greatly influences their choices, instilling a sense of security and confidence in the product's quality. However, the process of obtaining a halal logo remains complex and challenging. Consequently, Indonesian Muslim consumers have called for improvements in the distribution of halal food, especially in terms of support provided to local industries to obtain the halal logo easily and without cost.
